Mystery
The Case of the Knife-Tossing Networker
By Paul R.
Lloyd
Birdie was
hosting the chamber of commerce business after hours in our
conference room while I mingled with the networkers. I heard the
office door hinges squeal so I turned to look and there was
Lieutenant Lawson striding in like he owned the joint.
“What brings
you here, Lawson? Adding to your business card collection?”
“Nah. Got a
case that needs solving and your packed office is perfect.”
“How could a
crowd be perfect?”
“I'm trying to
solve a networking nightmare with a killer loose maybe
right here in your office.”
“I better check
over your notes, Lawson. You do have notes, don’t you?”
“Natch.” Lawson
fumbled around in his suit pockets before giving me that “oops” grin
of his that goes with a shrug of the shoulder. “Maybe, I better tell
you about it. First off, Brian Basher denies any knowledge of the
murder. Claims he was with the sales trainer when somebody tossed
the knife.”
“What did the
sales trainer say?” I wrote out a name tag for Lawson.
“Oh yeah, they
were together. Them two are as thick as thieves, but I fleeced him
for a tip that should pay us dividends.”
“How’s that?” I
planted the name tag on Lawson’s lapel.
“Thanks. He
said the sales trainer and Beth Sellers have been spending a lot of
time together and smooching is part of the deal.”
“That all you
got?”
“Mark Etting
claims he hasn’t been lip locking the HR consultant. He prefers to
spend his time with the manufacturing process consultant.”
“Not sure I
want to know what that’s about, Lawson. But it looks like your
killer has to be Brian Basher, Beth Sellers or Mark Etting. And
Basher and the sales trainer are providing an alibi for each other.
That about it?”
“It’s what I
got.”
“Than it’s a
cinch, Lawson, the knife-tossing networker is…”
